Concept

Concept videos are based around a single idea or concept and are usually obscure and surreal. The unusual content is used to attract consumers.Concept videos are normally hybrids of other music video concepts as well.A successful concept video keeps the audience entertained and keeps there attention on the video.Concept music videos don't really have a set genre as many genres use them.
An example of a concept video is the other side by the red hot chilli peppers

Narrative

Narrative videos have a story line which in most cases runs parallel to the song such as my chemical romance na na na.The story in the narrative can either agree or contradict the lyrics. This style relies on imagery to produce a story many of which are romantic.
The all american rejects often use narrative videos.

My chemical romance's na na na is a good example of a narrative music video as it goes against the norm with many narrative videos being romance where as this appears to be an adventure in a punkyn post apocalyptic world.

performance videos

Performance videos are videos in which you see the band perform on stage or elsewhere. The musicians lip sync and you see them playing there instruments etc. There are a lot of close ups and motifs in this kind of music video an example of this is thirty seconds to mars- closer to the edge.Examples of generic performance videos are:
  • The Darkness – I Believe in a Thing called Love
  • Lady Gaga – You and I
  • Sia – Chandelier
performance videos focus on shots of the band either on stage or in a casual environment such as rehearsal or socialising with friends.Indie and rock bands commonly use performance videos as it links in with there genre.
Performance videos are often the cheapest to make out of the three types and can give a very realistic representation of the band.
